I’m so excited to announce our latest FREE sew-along on BurdaStyle Academy! This one is perfect for anyone who wants to sew themselves a new swimsuit for the summertime with a little help from me. In this sew-along I’ll first be showing you how to adapt our Retro Bikini pattern top to suit stretch fabrics.

Retro Bikini

This pattern is so adorable, but it is drafted to be sewn with woven fabrics and in this sew-along I’ll show you how to adapt and grade up/down sizes. I also go over some modifications if you want to sew this top strapless, with the hook at the back, and more. For the bottoms, we will draft from scratch using the included swimsuit slopers to make a flattering pair of high-waisted retro bottoms to match.

Swimsuit sloper

Our swimsuit slopers come in both regular and plus sizes so everyone can draft the bottom as well as the off the shoulder one-piece style which is so on-trend for the summer! Grab your paper and drafting tools to create these styles and you’ll even gain new confidence to use these sloper to make even more swimsuits.

Two piece

Sew up the two piece in contrasting fabrics and elastics to make it your own and unique – myself, I just could not resist this cherry print! Don’t have a serger? NO PROBLEM! I sewed this swimsuit entirely on a regular sewing machine and it stretches with my like a second skin.

One piece

For the one-piece option I also go over how to sew a sturdy swimwear strap with elastic if you wanted extra support. The front of this suit is fully lined and I added fullness to the side seams to create a slight ruching effect. Then the flounce is drafted from scratch using math (oh yes, math!) and sewed into place with a thick concealed elastic. Sewing your own swimwear couldn’t be easier!

I also mentioned that you will also be entered to win a PFAFF® passport™ 3.0 sewing machine, and Coats Eloflex thread right? If you register for FREE before July 4th, you will be automatically entered to win one of these prizes from our lovely sponsors to make these free sew-alongs possible.

Happy Sewing! Now who is going to make their own swimsuit this season?
