DIY - Make your embroidered stockings

  • Cotton fabric with holiday print
  • Cotton
  • Fix stabiliser
  • Metallic embroidery floss
  • Metallic sewing machine needles
  • Copy film
  • Pencil
  • Thread

  • Embroidery scissors
  • Chalk pencil
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Straight pins
  • Seam gauge
  • Tape measure

Cut the cotton fabric to the approximate size, determine the position of the writing, and stick the Cotton Fix embroidery stabiliser to the wrong side.

On the brother innov-is NV800E embroi-dery machine, select the font, enter the name, and specify the position and size.

Now tension the fabric with the Cotton Fix in the embroidery frame and start stitching.

After finishing the embroidery, remove the fabric from the frame and use the embroidery scissors to carefully cut the threads between the letters.

Now trim the seam allowance to approx. 3 mm (1/4 in) all the way around and turn the boot right side out.

Pin the boot template to the wrong side of the fabric and trace the outline the with chalk pencil. If you like the shape of a previous stocking, just simply trace around it!

Pin the velvet piece to the cotton piece right sides together and stitch around the edge of the boot along the seam line (leaving an opening at the top).

Now trim the seam allowance to approx. 3 mm (1/4 in) all the way around and turn the boot right side out.

Cut the band from the velvet (38 x 10 cm (15 x 4 in)). Use an overlock stitch to neaten one long side and fold right sides together. Stitch 1 cm (3/8 in) from the edge.

Pin the band right sides together at the boot top and stitch a 3 cm (1 1/4 in) seam.

Cut out the loop (4 x 28 cm (1 5/8 x 11 in)), fold under 1 cm (3/8 in) at each side and press. Now fold at the centre and topstitch close to the edge on each side.

Fold the band edge under 3 cm ( in) and baste in place. Pin the loop to the inside and stitch along the ditch.

The loop makes it easy to hang the stocking wherever you want in your home.
