I actually have never sewn anything for the holidays but I really want to make a duster for one of my aunts this year. She’s really generous and always encouraging and loving on us. I want to do something special for her.

Not sewing related, but a few summers ago I spent each weekend making gourmet jams as Christmas gifts for friends and family. I put them together in boxes of three each. The varieties included apricot-habanero, rose water-raspberry, wild blackberry vanilla, strawberry vanilla, zesty lemon curd, orange-pineapple marmalade, blueberry-brandy, and cranberry-fig chutney. Each came with a small recipe card for either scones, muffins, or cookies. They were a great hit!

I’m getting ready for our beautiful church’s Christmas banquet by making a silver straight skirt to wear with an off white bell sleeve blouse. I hope to start making clothes for children in need.

I made pot holders for all my friends. They were made out of a pinkvintage cake/cupcake print with a red binding all around. I used thermal lining to make them functional. Made diagonal seams about an 1" apart for a “quilted” look and added a hook made of twill tape. Everyone loved them!

I made a beautiful chocolate brown and peach couture dress for my 15 year old daughter. All day she was wearing it she kept saying, “I feel pretty”. This lifted my heart. She suffers from depression, so to have such a wonderful day because I can sew, was the best.

Next assignment was in the southwest of Belgium. We moved into a house with, what seemed peculiar curtain rods built into the ceiling. The living room had one complete wall of window. A very helpful salesperson in a downtown fabric store explained what kind of ribbon and hooks I needed to make curtains, which would, with the flip of a wrist fly open or close. I finished a few days before Christmas and again, being able to sew saved the day.

My mother would bring make “ordinary” things into craft projects for my sisters and I every holiday season. Old Readers Digest magazines were folded and spray painted to make Christmas trees. Styrofoam balls, medicine cups and glitter were transformed into glittery decorations to hang in the foyer. She was a single mom, but always made us feel that the holidays were a time for family time to create something beautiful with our imaginations.

I made one year a fireplace XMas runner and it was nice. It was my 1st time and there were some parts I would have liked it to come out better, but overall it came out quite nicely. It was my first time so I appreciated that moment. I think when you sew even it’s something you’ve done many times before – there is always a way to make the item unique and improve the technique of construction.

So that is my moments. I am hoping that I can make MANY MORE. Good luck everyone and Happy Holidays and blessings. :)

    Sincerely, Chloe Collinslamotoguzzi@yahoo.com
