Oscar's Best Dressed 2017

There are two kinds of people in this world, those who only watch E!‘s red carpet coverage before the Oscar’s with no intention of actually watching the Oscars and those who commit to the 458453 hour long show. Last night, thankfully being closer to the west coast than the east coast, I sat through the entire thing. It was filled some sweet and funny moments, as well as drama, which the whole world is now aware of.

As far as the fashion goes, it didn’t wow me as much as I was hoping it would. I think I was actually more impressed with the Golden Globes red carpet. As I was looking over all my best dressed picks i noticed a prominant theme, neutrals, black and velvet. All with the exception of Ruth Negga in a bold red gown that got somewhat lost in the red carpet.

The BurdaStyle girls are in agreement that our favorites of the night were Brie Larson, Halie Steinfeld and Busy Philipps. Brie Larson looked so unbelievably stunning in her black velvet Oscar de la Renta gown paired with soft curls and a bold red lip. The guys also looked especially dapper last night, the blue suits won me over on Chris Evans and Riz Ahmed.

Best Oscars Gowns of All Time

We’re getting really excited about the 89th Academy Awards ceremony taking place this Sunday evening! It’s the most magnificent night for fashion because I think more than any other Hollywood event, celebrities want to put their best, most classic foot forward. There certainly isn’t as much scandal, shock and risk-taking than at say the Golden Globes or the Grammy’s. In anticipation, here is a roundup of the best and most iconic Oscars gowns in recent years.

Let us introduce: Greenery!

This is Pantone’s color of 2017: a yellowy-green shade full of energy and freshness. As the Pantone Institute stressed when introducing it, the color is a symbol for new beginnings. So let the journey begin in our closets and on our sewing tables. To follow this trend we need fabric in all shades of green and patterns with a plain cut as the strong color will look vibrant on its own.

Grammy's Trends '17

Last night the Grammy’s red carpet brought an, er, interesting mix of fashion choices. I’ll be honest it was not my favorite red carpet. It’s the Grammy’s though and it’s a chance for most celebrities and artists to take “risks” that they wouldn’t usually at an even like the Golden Globes and Oscar. Most of those risks included what I’m going to say needed lots of fashion tape if you get my drift. Alas, here are some of the best looks from music’s biggest night.

Valentine's Day Outfit Ideas

Valentine’s Day is one week away and whether you’re celebrating with a spouse or friends, it’s a great day to show those who are most important to you how much you love them. It’s also a good excuse to dress up and get out of the house! We pulled a bunch of cute accessories from ShopBop that really lean into the love theme of the day and paired them with BurdaStyle patterns.

Sew Dakota Johnson's Style

With the release of the last ‘Fifty Shades’ installment in just a few short weeks, we’re taking a look at the film’s leading lady, Dakota Johnson’s greatest style moments. She’s Hollywood royalty and her style, acting chops and movie franchise has secured her spot as an ‘It’ girl.

Mary Tyler Moore's TV Style Moments

Mary Tyler Moore has been an icon for so many women over the years. In addition to paving the way for feminists in a time when the word wasn’t trendy, she also changed style and the way women dressed for work. She laid groundwork for women to be funny, smart, independent, hard working and of course, fashionable. Here are some of our favorite Mary Tyler Moore TV style moments.

12 Must-Have Wardrobe Staples

Even if you’re not able to own each one of these items by the time you’re 30, we doubt you can argue with the necessity in having a versatile little black dress and a perfectly fit blazer. The idea of having timeless wardrobe staples is that you can better mix and match your wardrobe, leaving you without those “I have nothing to wear!” moments we’ve all experienced. Of course, this list will differ slightly based on everyone so tailor it to yourself. If you don’t love black, make your classic trousers in a bold blue or if you don’t feel comfortable in a pencil skirt, go for a pleated, skater skirt style.

What to Make & Take for Valentine's Day

Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with your loving spouse or a group of your favorite girlfriends, pretty underpinnings and a sexy cocktail dress will make this holiday much more bearable. We’ve rounded up courses to take that may inspire a new Valentine’s Day garment along with patterns perfect for a night out in the name of love.

Golden Globe Trends 2016

Last night the Golden Globes kicked off awards season with some of the most gorgeous, show-stopping red carpet moments that we’ve seen in years. There’s not a girl in the office this morning that isn’t swooning over at least a few looks from last night. We spotted quite a few trends, some favoured more than others, and also all picked our ‘Best Dressed’ of the night. Read below for all the details.

Buy vs. Make: New Years Eve Edition

New Year’s Eve is one of the most fun fashion nights of the whole year, in my opinion. Sparkly sequins, red lips, metallic stilettos are all key pieces that make me think of a fun way to ring in the new year. If you haven’t quite decided on an outfit to wear on December 31st, here is some high fashion inspiration that you can make on a much more modest budget with your creative craftiness. Don’t worry, we know you aren’t buying four thousand dollar dress and neither are we, but sometimes it’s fun to get inspired by fashion and see what we can come up with ourselves.

Fall Coat Trends

While we are still enjoying the fall temperatures here in Colorado, we know that serious cold weather is just around the corner and now is the time to sewing for it. Back in February, fashion designers sent coats down their runways that set the trends for our approaching weather and we’ve rounded up our favorites along with patterns to make them your own. If you’re looking to keep things classic, opt for minimalist coats with interest, grown-up toggles and pea coats with a modern shape. To make a statement, patchwork faux fur for optimal warmth and style, add shearling to points of interest on your topper or forgo fitted for an oversized silhouette. Read the article to see the six coat trends you should have on your fall sewing list.

DIY Maternity Style

In just a few months I’ll be turning the big 3-0 and while I’m still busy planning my upcoming wedding, many of my friends are planning their baby nurseries. The phrase “maternity style” may make most fashionistas shudder but in recent years I think with the help of celebrities, we’ve seen that not all style has to be thrown out the window while expecting. I think it’s important to look your best and of course yourself, even while you’re carrying a little one. Here are some of our favorite sewing, fashion and DIY bloggers showing just how stylish one can be during those challenging yet rewarding nine months.
