Rayon is the first non-synthetic “manufactured” fiber. It has been referred to as “artificial silk” due to its luxurious sheen and lustre.
Made from cellulosic pulp, it takes on properties similar to cotton and linen. It can also be made to look like wool.
It is not a natural fiber, and it is not a synthetic. Basically, recycled fiber lint is chemically treated then re-manufactured similar to synthetic fibers.
Some positive qualities include:
Good absorbancy
Softness of hand
Drapable
Blendable with other fibers
Vivid color or ability to accept dyes
Non-static
Disadvantages include:
Easily wrinkles
Low wet strength
High shrinkage
Raveling
