The sewing surface of a sewing machine or serger which is designed to allow the user an easier sew around a tubular construction by sliding it onto the end of the machine. It can be very useful in tight spots, however it does not offer the support features of a flat bed machine.
Today’s home sewing machine models are almost always free-arm, and come with an extension table that can be attached to offer more support.
