This type of working is necessary on an interfaced fabric or on other triple layers of fabric. Mark length of buttonhole on right side of fabric. Use normal sewing thread, or a thinner machine thread or darning thread for a finer fabric. To achieve an even buttonhole with
smooth contours and to prevent tearing, surround the buttonhole position with a line of stitching. Slash buttonhole slit in the centre, without snipping the ends! Neaten/finish raw edges with zigzag/over-lock stitching. Then buttonhole stitch around the edge by hand, preferably sewing from left to right.
