This is just a tip, but a very important one for the beginner. When sewing in the round, like hemming a sleeve, after pressing and pinning the hem in place, position the sleeve so the Right side is facing out. Sew within the "tunnel" of the sleeve. This way, there is absolutely no chance you will accidentally catch the rest of the sleeve under the needle.
