My 17 year old son has made messenger bags this way with black and white trash bags (99 cent store brand). The first, he used my machine to sew, and the later versions he did iron the seams together. They hold up really well.

thats such a great effect. i guess apart from reinventing the bag, you can even iron seams to make protective covers for stuff – like your sewing machine. excellent stuff!
