With French seams, we sew the seam twice — first, with WRONG sides together, and then again with RIGHT sides together. The first seam, wrong sides together, is sewn at 3/8". I'm following the guide on my throat plate, but a magnetic seam guide might be helpful if you're uncertain you can maintain that seam allowance on your own. Unlike other seam finishes, when you're pressing the seams open and finishing off the raw edges, there's just not room for much error in sewing when you make French seams.
