For customization and fun, one can make buttons from modelling clay. I've used FIMO which needs to set in the oven, it comes in lovely colours. Designs can varied using glass beads, or layers of different colours, there's also endless shapes one can make.

My daughter has a modelling clay “sweet shoppe” with sweets and pastry molds. These would make very cute buttons….

Looks pretty simple. Are they pretty durable?

The clay I’ve used (Fimo) is very durable, probably because they’re polymer based and need to set in the oven. I’ve washed the clothes with the ‘clay’ buttons often, no problem. Probably even tumble dried them. But avoid placing a hot iron on top, I mistakenly did it once, and it left a faint paler spot.
