This is the technique I used to make the appliqué shape on my Wave Dress. It was inspired by the Threads article "Go Graphic With Knits" in May 2009. It involves top stitching a design and trimming close to the stitching.
This technique can be used for any knit as long as it does not ravel too much. A jersey or anything firmer is a good choice. It is best for low-stretch areas, i.e. avoid the front bust region.
Choose two fabrics of comparable weight, drape, and stretch. Two identical fabrics are best.
jersey knit, paper, scissors, chalk, pins
