Another way to make a ruffle similar to the first method is to cut and hem your fabric strip, then cut a piece of narrow elastic the length you want your ruffle to be finished. Backtack the end of the elastic at the end of the fabric strip, then stretch it to the other end of the strip and pin in place. Stich the stretched elastic to the strip, backtack at the end and voila! , a lovely ruffle!

I like the second method but agree with the above comment.If you need to do a lot of ruffles you will appreciate the ruffler foot.

I also make ruffles using special sewing machine feet. I can safely say that if you’re going to do a lot of ruffling, even just for one project, it’s totally worth it to get a ruffle foot and learn to use it. They’re even fairly cheap; mine was less than $10 US.
