Use your iron to iron the seams flat, and press the edges to the underside (about .25" for each edge). Then for double-fold, fold it in half the long way and press a crease in the center.

what is bias tape used for?

It’s mostly used for binding edges, instead of doing a hem.

Thanks! I’ve used this, too and it works great. You can also press the seam allowance open before you cut the spiral strips.
