Once you have the pattern just right, cut around it in one big piece. Cut beyond the bottom edge of the "pattern" t shirt, all the way to the botton edge of the men's shirt. This way, you'll have plently of extra for hemming. You should end up with one big piece with the original shoulder seams and collar intact.
