    Yes, absolutely you can use a denim needle with the topstitching thread in the needle. If your machine can’t stitch through all the heavy layers, you can also serge or overcast the raw edge and stitch over that. Stitching from the top is trickier as you have to be careful to not miss the under layer, but is a superior result with most machines.

      Yep I think it just depends on your machine and your top stitching abilities. In my machine the gold heavy thread just does not like to be top thread and this was an easy work around that problem.

    Consider modifying your stitch length to match your original. Do some trial runs on the bits you cut off to test the results.

    Why should the topstitching thread be a bobbin thread only? If you use a thicker needle, shouldn’t that be enough?

      I use it as the bobbin only so that I can sew on the inside of the pants at the edge of the hem and it show nicely on the outside. You can try a heaver needle but in my experience with my machine it tangles and gets stuck no matter what type of needle you use.

    I am a shorty and hate that I have to either take them to get hemmed or let them sit in my closet;( Now I can do them myself! Thanks;}
