- fold and sew... i folded over the presser foot, 'cos i find it easier - i used the fabric on the wrong side, 'cos i didn't want my dress to be shiny

  It seems like the trick you used was to sew closer to the fold, and to make the hem narrow. That makes sense. My circle skirt pattern, however, calls for a 2/3 inch seam allowance. Is there a way to prevent gathers while sewing circle hems? Do you ever cut notches in the fabric?

  But I don’t understand how this is different from normal hemming… Won’t you get extra fabric because the fabric you’re folding up is more that the fabric that is there?
