When I have made fabric covered buttons in the past I have used kits that only had the front & back parts of the button, not the mold & tool. I found that if I hand stitched a gathering thread close to the edge of the fabric it was easier (especially with bulkier fabrics) to evenly position the fabric over the button front. I would then use a pin to make sure the fabric was caught by the teeth of the button front before pushing the back plate into place. A bit fiddly but it worked! I love the look of contrasting or self fabric buttons. Easy to embellish them for an individual look.
