The finished double stitched seam will look like this. If you did not serge the extra seam allowance you can now trim it close to the second row of stitching. You can also use a zigzag stitch instead of straight.

    I don’t believe that last picture is right. Why should it appear to have two rows of stitching from the right side? It should only look like one row of top- or edge-stitching/
