If you don’t own Adobe 8 professional you can also use this site http://www.pdfmerge.com/ to merge your files for free. When you scan them save them as pdf, upload to the site in order. you may have to do this several times if they limit the number of pages you can do at once. keep merging until you get 1 file!
If your scanner won’t save as pdf you can convert your files for free from virtually any format to pdf at http://www.zamzar.com/ It may add more steps to creating a pattern but it is a good option to save some $
