The Dress and the Lining are made up leaving the shoulder seams unstitched at this stage.
The trick here is to stop your stitching before you get to the shoulder seam line. Many instructions tell you to stitch the lining to the dress, stopping machining at the shoulder point but then it is really difficult to stitch the shoulder seam without catching the lining.
