An evening gown for my daughter’s graduation party.
This is my first fully-lined dress. The outer layer is chiffon, and the lining is satin. I made a lot of modifications to the original pattern: I changed the straps into fine spaghetti straps that are cris-crossed weaved at the back, removed the original back for little triangles to frame the back , and replaced the pleated knee-length skirt with a semi-circle full length skirt with a thigh-high slit.
As if the pressure of making a fully lined dress for the first time, with so many mods, and having it approved by my extremely opinionated girl – my machine died in the middle of the process! I had to complete many seams by hand, and some with the assistance of my mother’s machine.
To give the dress a proper frontal support, I bought a bra, slashed it at the sides and removed the straps, and sewed it manually into to lining of the dress. I attached the bra’s hooks to the front edge of the straps, so the bra is hanging from the dress’ straps is if they were its own.
Despite the frustrating making, my girl was delighted with the outcome. She got lots of compliments and most important: she was the only one wearing purple…
