This is one of my garments for my collection called, “For the Pleasures of Searing Water.” The collection was for our student show this year and the theme was “The Movies.” I was inspired by the movie (And book), “Memoirs of a Geisha.” I wanted to take Geisha history and motifs and apply them with modern contemporary western fashion trends.

One of the main components of “Memoirs of a Geisha” is the Fire vs. Water story that happens all throughout the movie. This story inspired my color palette, a hard vs. soft aesthetic, and fabrics. This dress represents the Geisha in training, learning to combine artistic vision with femininity. The dress is made from a cotton/linen blend and a leather yoke. An exposed side zipper also creates a slit down the side to reveal the leg. A kimono sleeve on the other side of the dress goes all the way to the hem.
