About a year ago, pambox and I went to a fabric market called Fabricabrac in Petersham, and one of my finds of the day was the fabulous mushroom fabric I’ve used in the inserts of this skirt. My other find was the great French market fabric I used for my Market Day skirt.
The mushroom fabric was a very small piece, so I’ve just been hanging onto it for a year, not sure what to do with it. I was going through our pattern drawer the other day and found Pam’s Study Hall Skirt pattern. I had plenty of fabric for the mushroom inserts and bottom hem band,The mushroom is quite a heavy cotton, so I though it would be good in a winter skirt. A trip to Spotlight later and I had this lovely dark pink corduroy for the main colour.
This skirt has a very odd construction and I had to grade it up a couple of sizes, but with such simple shapes that didn’t prove too difficult. I ended up leaving off the bottom hem band and just hemming the skirt instead. The obvious stripe of mushrooms didn’t lend itself well to the curved shape of the band, and using a straight piece wasn’t working either. I am very happy with the skirt as is, though!
