I’ve always wanted, and love to make and wear, a luxe under layer top for wearing under jackets and cardigans. Or, if it’s hot, and I just need to throw on a basic, yet chic (of course! always!) top with a skirt, jeans or shorts, I would reach for this top.
I used Cynthia Rowley’s Simplicity 1366 pattern, view C from this multi-view pattern, to make this simple tank top. I picked up a gorgeous silk charmeuse in a creamy ivory color from Mill End Store in Portland, OR.
I chose to eliminate the facings of the pattern, and just make a duplicate layer to self-line this semi-sheer top. It is cut on the bias, and left unhemmed, at least for now. I may go back and hem it later.
Honestly, I think I could improve on the construction of this top, just to make it look a little more professionally made. The things I could improve on are the turning of the straps so that they are meeting the edges of the tips of the curved edges perfectly, and also evening out the length of the straps as they are not quite symmetrical. Oh well, it’s my first top from this pattern, and it looks pretty darn good to me, despite the flaws, so I think I’ll keep it :)
I do love this top and can see making more of these, possibly adding some additional design features or embellishments.
