I crocheted my wedding dress from my own design without a pattern over the course of five months on the bus during my daily commute. I was able to buy all the materials including the cotton crochet thread and satin fabric at discount for about $30 USD. The dress was practically free because I didn’t spend much money on it and I used only commute time which would normally be wasted time. The dress is also machine washable (I’ve washed it several times), doesn’t wrinkle or need any special care, and I plan on wearing it again with linings of different colors and with the train bustled up in different ways.
Even though crocheting takes longer than sewing it is so much easier, requires less equipment and best of all it can be done anywhere. The lace fabric produced from crocheting is a lot more accommodating and forgiving than traditional fabric and there is little tailoring or shaping required. The satin lining that I sewed for wearing under the crochet dress was harder than the dress itself.
Since I had posted photos of the dress online I received many requests for a crochet pattern so I went back to develop a pattern. After several months of development, testing, and testing the pattern is finally available on Ravelry and Craftsy:
