this was my final work for my costume construction course at toi whakaari. i based it off one of beatrix potter’s drawings from the tailor of gloucester. we had the year to bring a picture to life, and at the end we had costume showcase to show off our results. it was videoed, and you can watch my mouse at – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5c6xjFDO8I.
the costume consists of a bustle, petticoat, gown, apron, neck ruff and the mouse mask. the mask was made by carving a polystyrene block to the shape i wanted and then casting fibre glass over the top. i had to drill and sand out eye and ear holes, added the ears and then stuffed the inside with foam and lined it. the eyes i made myself and give very limited vision out the sides (huge blind spot in the middle) and the eye-holders and ears are made from a material that you can mould when hot water is applied. once those had been attached i cut up an old rabbit fur coat and spray glued that on, then added some pieces of stripped rigilene for whiskers. the last step was to attach the mob cap. :)
photographs are taken by leah reilly, and my model is frith horan.
