I have always despised shopping for bathing suits, and I know I’m not the only one. While I’ve made quite a few challenging projects, lingerie and swimwear seem to be the most intimidating, but I was tired of the futile search for the ‘perfect’ swimsuit so I just thought to hell with it, I’ll try making one myself.

I may have mentioned this before, but I really love the idea of using classic vintage silhouettes with more modern/contemporary prints and colors. I’ve had this pattern for some months, so I knew I wanted a swimsuit with more coverage, but I saw Atomic Blonde recently and really loved the late 1980s palette in that, and so I got inspired to do the swimsuit in a vintage shape with brighter, funky colors.

I’ve never worked with nylon spandex before and it wasn’t as bad I had imagined it would be, but still not exactly a dream…it’s very unforgiving, as I think you can see, that literally any tug or snag or tension shows right through. Some things, like the side seams on the bottoms, and the topstitching on the top would not lay flat no matter how much I tinkered with them. The pattern recommended top stitching all hems, but I tried to get away with blindstitches where I could (see edge of cups and leg holes).

Overall, not my favorite pattern, as I thought it could have suggested nicer finishes, and it being my first swimsuit it’s a bit of a learning curve, especially with this kind of knit. But overall, I’m pretty proud of it! And it’s a project I’ll actually use and wear, so hurray!
