Burda Style For people who sew

Pattern is from Fiona Bell’s ‘Sewn with Love’ book. The fabric strips the pattern called for were way too long. I even took a whole chunk out after I had already sewn three of the rows and it could still stand to be less. The proportions of the lengths were out such that some layers required gathers that were too tight and made the fabric bunch. The bottom layer was so long that I had to gather it in sections. Whilst all the steps in constructing this skirt are quite simple (just gathers, straight seams and an elastic waist) the lengths of the pieces and the mismatch of ratios made it really quite tricky and frustrating. Whilst the result is certainly still a fun and twirly skirt that I’m sure my niece will love, the pattern and the accompanying instructions were not great. It is simple enough however that I think I could make it again and fix the issues. I think all I’d need to do is work from the waist section down and cut shorter strips (than the pattern called for) in roughly equally increasing lengths.
