Brooklyn, New Yo...
Back in July, I was invited to participate in a collaboration with Burdastyle where I got to create a garment using Westminster’s Liberty Art Fabric and a Burdastyle Magazine pattern. Timing was short but who am I to say no to free fabric and a free pattern!?
I chose the Meadow pattern from the Marylebone Collection, color way LB20 Gold.
Picking the fabric was my favorite part of this project and it was even prettier than I had hoped. I love yellow and pretty yellow floral prints are few and far between. Once I had my fabric in hand I ran over to my favorite local trim store (Pacific Trim on 39th Street) and bought a RiRi zipper with gold teeth and a pale cotton zipper tape to match the fabric. RiRi zippers are so gorgeous. I don’t think I’ll ever buy another YKK again unless it’s invisible. RiRi zippers are so chic… and so expensive… and so worth it. I am so in trouble. :)
For the pattern, I chose the cap sleeve mini dress #130 from the 1/2010 issue. It was a hot summer this year in NY and I had that (and the short time frame) in mind when I picked out this shift dress pattern. Cute, cool, simple and sweet were my requirements. I made a size 10, and I did a full bust modification to the accommodate my figure. I wanted the zipper teeth to be exposed in the back, which I accomplished by setting the zipper further away from the seam allowance edge. I also added side seam pockets.
If picking the fabric was my favorite part of the project, than waiting in anticipation for the pattern was not! I had a trip to Canada planned that would cut into my sewing time, so I was anxious to get started right way once it arrived. I was also hoping to be able to take it with me to Nova Scotia for a late summer photo shoot. Luckily I had no trouble putting this dress together and it made it into my suitcase for the trip. I ended up wearing it around downtown Lunenberg and around the beach near the cottage that I was staying at. After the trip I got a few more snapshots in my neighborhood in Brooklyn on the last warm days of summer.
