Description

This fabric has its own story… decades ago I spotted a very cool yellow coat at Kate Spade. Of course the price was beyond my limits, I was not willing to BUY a coat … kind of honor-thing I am afraid. O.K. I can manage to sew a similar one. So I got a very expensive “Walkloden” (the origin name for all that cooked wool-fabrics, a very traditional method to handle wool fabrics to be more weatherproof, very common in Austria and Southern Bavaria).
After a good amount of time I had the fabric in my stash, my taste changed and I was no longer soooo fascinated by this certain Kate-Spade-coat. So what to do with the fabric???
One day I scrolled and clicked through Burda Style and saw the next most fascinating coat:

She did such an amazing version of a Burda magazine pattern!
Best thing – and worst: I OWN that certain magazine … and why did it not came to my mind just to skip that very silly ruffle-thing? I did remember very well what came into my mind as I picked the mag: “What an idiot detail, who is designing such strange fashion?”
OK shame on me – and my very arrogant behavior. Which trapped me in strange feelings and so I was not able to see beyond.
But after I had seen kokuryus coat, I was totally into this pattern!
She just skipped the frills, I wanted to go one step ahead – was it possible to skip the whole bib-part?
Of course – and very easy too!
So in the end, my version got some veeeery soft frills too: I gathered the bust dart-amount of fabric at the raglan seams.
Plus: I thought the now so clean and simple look could bear some big pockets.
So I remembered how to sew on pockets with no visible seams – by machine. Worked well enough – wool fabric is always very kind, so some ironing finished the job to a satisfying level.
Thats not all: I wanted a surprise-effect inside: A stripy lining. But of course, you cannot find any stripy lining fabrics. So I made one for myself: bought black and white lining, cut into big stripes and sewed it together.
Only thing I forgot to check: for my taste the sleeves are too short – the are more elbow length, then 3/4, which I would have preferred. I did a facing hem to win at least the 4 cm seam allowance, but still a bit too short.
But in general: I am super satisfied.

    I think it looks fabulous! I love that color, no I ADORE that color! What a great idea for the coat too! Taking off the ruffles and the bib never made anything look so good. Very modern and chic! One word: perfect! xoxo, Sunni
