This dress was an exercise in pattern drafting – I fitted a basic bodice block and added a gathered skirt (basically two rectangles). After fiddling around with sleeve Ideas I came up with these ruffle sleeves.
Then there’s the important stuff – the back! I used a bias tape maker to make a bunch of bias tape strips which I inter-weaved in a big back cutout. It was more difficult than I thought it would be to get all the strips balanced and stretched just right but I think it turned out pretty good for the first try. I used more bias tape for the neckline binding. I inserted an invisible side zipper because a back zip obviously wouldn’t work in this case.
The fabric is a lovely floral rayon that I bought locally but you can find it online. It has a really nice feel and drape.
