Description

I work at a restaurant where we were recently told that our uniform would be changing. (We used to wear blue dress shirts and these terribly boxy mens-cut vests) I bought my new pants and button down shirts, but when they said we could wear our own solid black vests, I saw this as a chance to break out the old sewing machine!

The vest is completely self-drafted, for better or worse. It is also fully-lined. Other than the vest I made for my daughter’s Halloween costume last year, this is the first vest I have ever made. Looking back on the process, I should have gotten a pattern for the instructions, and just altered it to achieve the look I wanted.

Material Notes

Polyester suiting and lining from JoAnn’s, buttons sourced from my old uniform vest.

I read the blogpost about comments you heard at work about the styling. I actually like the back of the vest as it won’t bunch up and allows your shoulders to move. The front-have to agree with the beer worker/aka Oktoberfest comment as I thought the same thing! You may find some BurdaStyle vests on the US or German site that provide more coverage on the front for the next vest project.

You could attach a loop on the bottom of the vest or maybe the soft part of self-fastening tape and wrap the hook part of tape to a light retractable pen (would avoid stick pens or anything with cap and definitely no gel pens) so you can stick a pen there for when you or a customer need one to write/sign.

You got the personal fit, so thank management for the “own vest” option as it helps make the uniform more flexible.

I wanted the Oktoberfest look for this one because I’m fairly small chested, and took this as an opportunity to enhance that part of my look a little. :)
I also like the back as it is. I definitely didn’t want the full shoulder-to-shoulder fit that you find on mens’ vests!
