Burda Style For people who sew

I’ve finished this sometime in autumn and most of the details are already somewhere at the back of my head. This pattern is actually meant for knits (something I use rarely and for sewing underwear only) and the pictures that went with the pattern seemed rather horrible… On the other hand I really liked the bell shape of it and thought I might give it a go with woven fabric. I skipped the ridiculous sleeves and lengthened the hem about 10cm to turn it into a dress. When I say I’ve skipped the sleeves I mean there were these crazy additions to the kimono like sleeves that looked like flimsy balloons. I like the use of my hands, than you very much, so I simply laughed at the fashion in 2007 and proceeded with my muslin. My hands are thin, so the kimono sleeves worked just fine without gussets.
I used a rather soft fabric for the muslin, everything seemed ok, so I turned to the actual fabric. And here’s the catch: the soft fabric draped softly around my neck hiding one feature of the pattern (or it might as well be my body because I always have a problem like that). Anyway, when I’ve attached the neckband to my actual dress it turned out… than it was gaping quite badly in the center, both at the front and in the back ;( I was too lazy to do anything about it and besides I was going to wear this dress as a layer (the only way for me to survive winters in Lithuania – layering) and I left it at that. The funny thing is that this dress turned out to be my most worn garment during the winter. I’m not sure about the fabric (some sort of blend) but it wrinkles very little, so it’s good for sitting in the library all day long without constricting my movements due to the loose shape (although I must admit the fabric does add structure on the whole). And the pockets make it a truly comfortable dress :)

The pattern comes from Burda Easy Fashion 2007 (Autumn/Winter), mod. 12, size 34. It used to be for download on the German Burda, but I couldn’t find it there when I’ve checked last, so I’ve added a link to the French Burda.
