Butterick 5032, Retro 1952: MISSES’ CAPELET, DRESS, OVERSKIRT, CUMMERBUND SASH AND BELT: Lined to edge capelet, darted at shoulders, collar and button closure. Fitted dress, darted bodice, waistline seam, square faced neckline, pleated skirt front with back zipper closure and back slit. Gathered waistline overskirt, contrast hem band with back zipper and button closures. Cummerbund sash with front tucks and gathered drape. Belt with purchased buckle.
The thing that I liked best about the pattern was the cummerbund sash which turned out to be the worst idea I had. The dye of my quilting cotton was not fully saturated through to the wrong side so I decided to line it. Once I was finished, and went to tie the sash around my waist I realized that the knot was going to add a whole lot of bulk to the waist (not the look I was going for).
I added my usual 3/4" to the torso length. I also added cap sleeves to the dress. The biggest alteration I made was to the over-skirt. Because I had used up my self-fabric on the cummerbund pattern which was a bit of a failure, I did not have enough fabric left to make the over-skirt. I found a cotton sateen in a beautiful wine color that worked with the original print. I did not want to cover the straight skirt, so my non-sheer fabric was not going to work. I ended up with a vintage inspired look that left the front of the over-skirt open to showcase the slim skirt of the sheath dress.
This is a fabulous pattern, and I would highly recommend it.
