If the wide leg style is too bold, try it in a fabric with some drape such as wool crepe.
To make the pattern easy for beginners, rather than a fly front, I have opted for a zip in the back seam, 50’s slacks style which is also more flattering.

I have used a lightweight denim for this project but it would be good in a variety of fabrics.
Make sure you pre-shrink your fabric if it is washable.
