Hi, I just made my first pieces of underwear too, and like to use zig-zag contrasting stitching. I was just taught a way to fasten the thread without getting overlapping seams or having to backstitch, and have used that on the underwear and it looks much more neat. You simply start with a straight stitch, set to length 0. Let the needle go up and down 3-4 times, then change to zig-zag (with the needle up, of course). Your thread is fastened securely, but it is not visible. Then you go all the way around and just let the seams meet, then fasten in the same way. Looks neater and you get the lovely zig-zag decorative seam… :)
