Description

I was dying to make this dress for the longest time, but couldn’t bring myself to do it because of the amount of fabric needed (cost). I finally found some amazing yellow seersucker on sale, and went for it.

I read online that most people had to take length off at the arm seam. I’m glad I knew that before I completed the dress because I took an inch and a half off each side because it didn’t lay correctly otherwise.
Also the pattern instructions require the front to close with snaps. Don’t kid yourself. No dress is going to stay shut with snaps. I added two hook and eyes between each snap.

I’m very disappointed in how it turned out for several reasons.
1. The shoulder seams. They just don’t lay properly and it looks like the dress is about to take flight off the ends of my shoulders. I am probably going to rip off all of the bias tape and fix this.
2. My decision to use cream colored bias tape. It’s too much yellow to go neutral. Will rip it out and fix.
3. The fit. In theory its super cute, but I don’t think it’s that flattering. Maybe in my re-vamping I’ll figure out how to fix it.

UPDATE
8/13/11
After a frustrating trip to the fabric store, I could not find any double fold bias tape that looked okay with the yellow. So, I’m keeping the cream color. I think I will take a cue from Fipp’s coral-cloud-1952-dress and fix the neckline (http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/coral-cloud-1952-dress). I also added some pictures to show the poor fit.

I’ll hopefully be done tomorrow! Pictures soon, I promise!

UPDATE #2
1/5/12
I didn’t have enough time during the summer to fix the neckline, so I will have to wait until next summer to wear it. However, I’m so happy I did it. I love, love LOVE this dress now. I simply added pleats and a button to the front of the dress. I’m certain that you could probably add one to the back, but I think it looks cute in the front. The last three pictures are updates (sorry for the poor quality/bad lighting).

I think this looks good! I just finished a dress using this pattern as well, and I’m having a similar problem with the fit of the top — the bust especially. I’d be curious if you ever managed to resolve your fit issues! I figure at worst case, I have a new beach cover-up… :)

Thanks everyone for your kind comments! I was hoping to get back to this project earlier, but work got in the way! Please stay tuned for the re-vamped dress.

Also – so far as the fit goes, its the upper bodice that just doesn’t fit right. It’s like the waist, length, and upper bodice were made for three different women. I tried taking pictures, but none could really show the icky fit. Again, I hope to get back to this soon, and thanks for all the support! xoxo clh

This looks great! very retro. It doesn’t seem to have fit issues, but either way i think it looks fabulous.

i too was very excited about this dress and i too had the same feelings about it. i was surprised how unflattering the dress looked on me. it looks like a great dress, but not for me. if you do decide to tinker with it, i will be excited to see the new and improved version

Well, in the picture, it looks lovely on you. Great fit, too. Maybe it’s your pose, but the shoulders look good to me…

Thanks! I’m going to try to revamp it this week, and I’ll add better/closer pictures, and of the ‘new’ dress. I don’t think this is a total flop, but I don’t love it enough right now to wear it.

Well, I don’t agree with you:) I think it looks fabulous on you! I don’t see anything wrong with the sleeves, but the picture is not that close up. You really did a good job, just enjoy it!
