Ouidah, Benin

When there is a big gathering (party, funeral, wedding, etc.) here in Benin the thing to do is to buy the same fabric and get matching outfits made. Which is why I decided to make the Colette Peony featuring this wavy Vlisco print for the retirement party of the principal at the school where I volunteer at. It’s a way of showing solidarity with the hosts – and fun as well to be matchy matchy with everybody else!

I wrote more in my sewing journal here:

You have the most amazing fabrics! I loved reading about all the different customs too, it sounded like a blast!

What beautiful traditions (except for the funeral part, of course). The fabrics are so lively.

when the funerals are for older (60+) they are actually happy events with singing, dancing, and partying! quite the opposite from our culture :)
