Description
“The Metropolitan” IJ758 was my starting point for this bag. Like the purses in the pattern photo, I created mine with a piece of vintage barkcloth from my collection, then lined it with linen and trimmed it with faux suede. I just love the combination of textures!
This purse looks very different than the cover photo, but it’s mostly about construction, rather than dramatic pattern changes.
The top band and purse body are combined into a single piece and the bottom corners are rounded. My intention was to create a purse that had a belt as an accent, so the handles are sewn on the outside of the purse at points 2 inches apart, thereby creating “belt loops”.
I made the handles with a soft and durable faux suede, which is used to bind the top edge. Additionally I made a belt with it, fastened with a button.
The interior is chartreuse linen (another goodie from my stash). I like lighter colored purse linings—-makes it easier to find things!. I made a zippered pocket and a larger, divided pocket trimmed in suede. This bag closes with a magnetic snap.
The button is a vintage leather coat button. It was a pale grey, but I didn’t care for the color, so I painted it with my Shiva Paintstix to a pleasing coordinating color.

Thank you. I designed this with the idea of using belts and scarves. Like a solid color bag (maybe denim) that you could accessorize with fun scarves from your closet.

Thank you! I saw that you sew “green”—I do the same. Love my vintage textiles and notions, and love the challenge of using fabric from clothing, etc. (plus I’ve become that person around here people think about when they’re getting rid of fabrics. Yay!) Your creations are just lovely!

Thank you so much! This bag was fun to make and is REALLY comfortable to carry. I’ll have to keep your vintage button website in mind. I realized I didn’t have a good vintage buckle OR button that would look good with this fabric, so I ended up painting a vintage leather button. I like the result, but would have preferred something really “vintage” looking.
