Description

I went to a 1940s Swing Dance party on new year’s eve. Unfortunately my swing dancing isn’t up to much, but I did make a vintage style dress to wear. The print is not so vintage, but I’ve had my eye on this fabric for a while, so what the hell.
The dress is based on Burda Shari 7951, but I did quite a lot of alterations. Firstly, I have to do a full bust alteration on anything. The big question then is where to do you put all that extra fullness? I added a yoke and pleated the front into that. I also made a big discovery – when hiding bust fullness the armscye is your friend! Some of the extra bust fullness is taken up by increasing the curve of the front armscye (and extending the sleeve head to match).
I made leg-o-mutton short sleeves instead of the cap ones in the pattern.
The pattern is fully lined, but I omitted the lining and I didn’t interface the … what would you call it… the band around the middle. Instead both that and the shoulder yoke are double thickness fabric. I added a facing to the neck line and bound the raw edged with bias binding made from a scrap of lining fabric.

I’m pleased with the result; my mum said she had a dress in that style, so I guess I must have got it about right. However, I’m not sure I can wear it again as it stands. I may take the puffy sleeves off and put cap sleeves on so I can wear it as a summer dress this summer.
