I made this dress using a vintage (undated but possibly around 1973?) pattern I scored on ebay. I wanted to make an autumn ‘day-dress’ as I only tend to wear dresses in the evening or when it’s blazzing hot weather. I had quite a few difficulties making this seemingly simple dress, but most of those problems were caused by me ignoring advice and my own experience. ANYWAYS. I’m happy with the result. Phew!

Some nice blend that was pretty forgiving and didn't need much ironning. Vintage buttons to create a mock-yoke effect.

An absolute beauty! It’s amazing how a dress in the not so accurate vintage picture turns into such a wonderful garment. I have overlooked so many vintage patterns just because the drawn pictures didn’t look appealing. This proves me wrong!

This is lovely – you look FAB – I esp like the sleaves. The red tights & lips are a HIT! (Might have to remember that look for when it is winter over hear in Australia!!!)

What?! A girl from Essex telling a French woman about style?! HA! Actually my recent experiment with red tight and adoption of red lipstick is an attempt to appear a bit French! x

I didn’t want to write them here because I think this is such a positive site that people visit to get inspired! but mainly it was ignoring my own experience! happy sewing

I totally would have passed up this pattern, the illustration on the envelope does this dress no justice.
….good for you that you had the foresight to see it in another guise. Your version is just lovely.
thanks for the tip on UK eBay (2 UK wow that is like $4 US!!!) ….off to warn my family (who I already have checking UK charity shops) to start expecting stuff in the post :)

Very simple and yet amazingtly feminine due to the slight flare of the skirt and the puffy sleeves. And I love the pattern you chose – it makes the dress look a hundred times better than on the envelope.

This is lovely! It suits you so well! I, too, have fallen in love with it ! I need some nice vintage patterns! Unfortunately the German ebay doesn’t have a big selection. I might try the British one. Are there many vintage patterns on the Spanish version?

Many thanks! To be honest, I haven’t checked the Spanish ebay for patterns as I have heard poor reviews about it in general, and the British one is so good for patterns, PLUS it has the bonus for me of having all the listings in my native language. I never pay more then £2 for a vintage pattern, excluding P&P. I’d definately recommend that you check out the UK one, though make sure the seller ships to Europe before you bid, some don’t so I’ve had to get those sent to my mum’s! Good luck!

I just fell in love with it!! I like the simple design of the dress, the elasticated cuffs of the sleeves and the buttons which are a great choice for this dress! Excellent job I might add!!

Many thanks! It is an easy style to reproduce should you want to. It’s a really simple shift dress shape. A normal sleeve pattern would need slash and flaring for added width then make a simple casing for the elastic at the wrist. Happy sewing!
