This was a custom made jacket I made for a friends birthday. It was inspired by the Bettina Liano ‘Alexis’ Jacket. Full details over at my page http://utbwb.blogspot.com/2010/01/whats-on-mannequin-veruca-salt.html

Your friend is so lucky! Great job, you’re very clever, I’d love to find a pattern like this.

It’s gorgeous! I love all the details you have there, the small pieces and darts and seams here and there… And also the pleats on the sleeve! Incredible work!

This is awesome. I love asymmetrical closures on jackets. Your friend’s very lucky to get it as a present.

Impressive! I guess since it’s a knock-off item, you’re not allowed to make the pattern available (if you wanted) and it’s too bad because I’d do this in a hearbeat! Beau-ti-ful!

I have a question. Sew, if we are copying off something like Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Coco Chanel, etc, we can not put up a pattern. But if it’s like Simplicity, Burda, Vogue then we can put up a pattern?

you’re only allowed to put up patterns that you have made, that aren’t knock off items. it has to be your original work. you can list that you used a commercial pattern, but you cant upload it into the pattern section.
at least that’s how i understand it.

Yes, that’s how I understand it too…

I prefer to say ‘inspired by’ as apposed to knocked off or copied, it is not an exact replica of the jacket, the hem for example is quite different, detail panels I have omitted etc etc. (The original jacket is on my blog if you have not seen it).
However I would certainly never put my name to it and claim I designed it myself either, merely drafted the pattern.
It is definitely a grey area (and one I would not tread in), because I am sure that the major pattern companies are frequently looking to designers for inspiration, so that their next seasons patterns are as fashion forward as possible. Does this make their patterns ‘knock-offs’ or originals?

You’re right, that’s a very positive to look at it. Strictly seen, all of todays trends inspired by or based on items from the 80’s should be named “knocked off”!
