Description

My challenge was to upcycle an old brides maid dress of silk shantung into a glamourous modern prom dress. The original dress was a hand me down from mother to daughter for this special occasion. A size 8 A-line dress with spaghetti straps left much to be desired for a beautiful size 4 high school senior girl.

My inspiration- Hollywood legends such as Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe

After seeing the dress for the first time I came up with a sketch, then draped a pattern and went from there. I used every bit of the original dress even crafting a belt with the scrap cuttings. I cut and gathered over 20 yards of tulle to create the trumpet underskirt. Magically a new shape and dress emerged with fantastic results.

This was a very rewarding project, the result even surpassed my own expectations leaving me very thirsty to reinvent some more old dresses. My client was easy to please and thrilled with the design and results. Maybe the easiest client ever!

It’s gorgeous! What a great idea! Why waste beautiful fabric by letting it hang in the back of the closet!? I’m sure mother and daughter were very pleased with the results of the makeover…
