Unsatisfactory Maxi Skirt - Improvement Ideas?

Added Aug 4, 2014

This project started out as a maxi dress, but I had fitting problems and ended up making it into a skirt. But it hasn’t gotten much wear because I feel like I’m in a Victorian costume when I wear it. Does anyone have an opinion on how this looks best? I tried it with a couple combinations of shirts and belts. Should I make it into a maxi dress after all? Or start over and make something completely different? The fabric is too pretty to hide in the back of my closet! :(

But it’s lovely! Goes especially well with the purple top, untucked. You could wear various coloured tops with it by picking out the colours from the skirt. If you’ve got enough material over you could make the bodice part as a separate? Or even a little Bolero type top? But I really do like the skirt. Don’t hide it away – wear it!

The plum t-shirt and belt works perfectly with the skirt. I think it is beautiful! It does not look a costume at all!

I love it as a maxi skirt! Especially with the purple top. You can attach a full skirt with the bodice you made, maybe with a magenta or color fabric that matches close to one of the colors in the bodice.

I like it very much as a skirt with that purple top (I don’t see the victorian costume quality that you speak about). The dress option also looks nice. Why not also make the bodice and wear it as a two-piece dress?

I think turn it into a Maxi dress the fabric is beautiful and you’ll get more wear out of something practical.

Fabric is beautiful but does look Victorian. I would go with either a Kimono jacket or really wide leg pants.

I like it with the T shirt tucked in and the modern belt. Your fabric is spectacular!
