Choose the length you want the bodice of the pattern to be; mine was about 5" below the top of the main size 4 pattern piece. Then, choose the number of tiers you want; 3 is a good number but not required. Choose the length you want your tiers to be; I made my top tier 20 cm, my middle tier 25 cm, and my bottom tier 10 cm (obviously, the length of your bodice plus length of all your tiers minus seam allowances and hem will equal the total length of the dress).
Each tier should be roughly twice the length of the tier above it; your first gathered tier should be at least twice the circumference of the dress pattern.
