Description

Admittedly there is nothing very glamorous about making Tshirts, but I was surprised at how hard it is to make a Tshirt. Yes, it’s easy to make one. Very easy even. But not if you want to get it right. I drafted my own pattern and it took me a lot of time to get it to the point where I was happy with it. I’d share it with you but my laptop’s hard drive crashed and I’ve lost it :( Fortunately I still have the paper version of which these were made.
Once you have a pattern that suits you, making Tshirts is easy, except for one thing: the neckline. Oh boy the neckline is a pain in the neck. I still have a lot to learn before I’ll be able to make the perfect V-neck, but I’ve made a lot of progress already, and if I make a couple of dozen more of these I think I might just get it right.
As for the moment Brussels is covered under a blanket of snow, it’s a petty I won’t be able to show these any time soon.

T-shirts are a challenge, I am working on it too. I think as a girl I have an advantage that I can just leave the neck line a raw edge and I think it is a little sexy as it stretches a little ;) Hope you find the perfect one some day but the hunt really is part of the fun, well sort of any way.

Yeah I get that, it’s really sore to make a Tshirt and then ruin it with the neckline ;)
But no guts no glory :)

Gray with black stripes is my fav! I heard that the jersey is hard to work.

The stretch makes it a bit harder to sew with. And it can also be a bit of a pain in the * to cut nicely. But it’s not the end of the world either ;)

I like the t-shirts, especially the stripey one. I think a coverstitch machine helps but they are really expensive and only do the one stitch.

I have one but I don’t use it for the neck line. Should I?

These t-shirts look very good to me. I know the necklines are hard but there are a few simple mathematical rules to applying the neck band. If you google or you tube any question regarding knit sewing, I am sure you will get some good answers.

That’s what I thought, but guess what: there’s not a single video on YouTube that shows clearly how to make a proper V-neck. None.
There’s videos for everything but this, I have the feeling is some ancient secret ;)

Great! I’m working on a similar project right now. I’ve just been making round u-neck shirts so far — which is probably not so difficult as a v-neck. (Just using a twin needle-I don’t have a serger or cover stitch machine). It was great too see your project and I’m glad to know I’m not the only person in quest of a perfect t-shirt fit!

I don’t know if V-neck is harder, or if it’s just a personal thing but I found the round ones to be a bit easier. They are certainly faster!
But hey, maybe Vs will be easy for you, you should try :)

Thanks for your reply and encouragement, joost52. I was inspired by your project and I hope to try the v-necks some day too! In the meanwhile, I also saw your comment above about there being no YouTube video. I thought of this v-neck diagram on the Threads Magazine website, and just in case you or others are interested, it is here: http://www.threadsmagazine.com/assets/uploads/posts/3742/65-custom-t-shirt-11.jpg
I’m not sure if it will help, but it is one way of doing it.

Thanks for the tip, although it’s twice the same link it was still useful :)
Also, it’s joost, the 52 is just my shoe size ;)

hey guy, for me these are quiet perfect. The neckline is the reason why I don’t sew T-shirts :-) maybe I can get some lessons by you?

Necklines suck! I’ve made three tops with necklines and they are slowly improving.

Your Tshirts are cute! I like the border one you are wearing. The V-neckline looks natural and beautiful to me. I look forward to seeing the Tshirt with perfect neckline:) and sorry about your laptop..

And no worries about the laptop, I’ve done it before, I’ll do it again. And I should learn to take a backup ;)

dear friend! i really like your t-shirts and have to say, that i do not find it very easy making them. at least not, if you want to make them of good quality with a nice neckline. i agree, that this is the most difficult part. i really like the last one with the strips the most, as i love the colors of that one. and i think, you did a wonderful job on those shirts! BRAVO!
