This outfit is 100% handmade! I saw the tribal printed fabric and this top instantly flashed into my brain. Being tall and picky, I decided to draft a pattern myself and I’m thrilled with the results – particularly that the bustpoint is correct, the empire waist band is UNDER my boobs and the thing is long enough!! All typically tall-girl problems.
I also bought some great stretch denim and used Jalie 2908 (http://www.jalie.com/jalie2908-women-s-stretch-jeans-sewing-pattern.html) to make some jeans. If you haven’t heard about this pattern yet – it’s seriously the best jeans pattern out there, I think. I modified the leg to make skinny jeans (it’s typically a bootcut) and used the high-waist option. They turned out fabulous and I wear them all the time. It’s nearly impossible to find skinny jeans that fit a 6ft tall size 14 gal, but now I have a pair! I seriously <3 sewing. Seriously.
Thanks for the view and happy happy sewing!!

I don’t think I can say anything more than what already been said…just wanted to offer my praise as well. Excellent ensemble! The whole outfit looks better than ready-to-wear, and extremely flattering. Great job!!!

Thank you so much, Lorilaroo! That just makes my day. There are a few mista…I mean character bits that you can’t see, but hey, that’s all part of it…I sometimes look at my RTW stuff and see worse…much worse.

Thank you for the kind words. I worked pretty hard on the top, first making a muslin and ripping and sewing and ripping and sewing and…well, you get the picture :) But totally worth it when you have your own custom pattern suited just to you!

Thank you! I was a bit intimidated at first, but the pattern was pretty good, so alterations were minimal!

Thank you everyone for your kind words! And thanks to Burdastyle for featuring my project! I’m so thrilled, grateful and honoured to be featured among such talented sewests. So happy to hear some of you are trying the jeans pattern too…a jeans pattern that fits is worth its weight in gold, if you ask me :)

I love both the top and the jeans and so clever of you to self-draft the top. Looks like nice denim fabric too. Did you get that locally in Perth?

Hi sarahwau! Thanks! Yes, I got it at Fabulous Fabrics in Perth city on the second floor of Meyer. I didn’t know it was there till a few months ago…really nice stuff. Perth suffers from a lack of fabric shops, but that’s a good one.

Love the top! Is this the same fabric that was used for a certain Anthropologie dress (Study of shapes dress)? It had the same colors and this top reminded me of that dress. :)

Great job on both pieces!!! The Jeans look so great! So professional looking! I have always been afraid of sewing up jeans, although I have played with the idea for a while… Maybe soon I will courage up and give it a go ;>

Thank you very much! It’s totally worth it – I’m never buying jeans again. I actually didn’t need to do too much alteration to the pattern (shockingly), but it did take some adjustment to get the skinny leg. Good luck and hope to see piccies!

Oh, tell me about it. I swear it gets worse with every season. I went to the Gap when I was in Canada to find jeans and they said the tall size stopped at a size 12!! I have hips, man! That’s why I found making my own jeans to be gold.

Your top and jeans are really nice and you look great in them. I am not quite as tall as you (2") less, so I am very interested in your jeans pattern. Thanks for sharing.

No worries! I’m always spreading the word about that jeans pattern…just make sure you use stretch denim, as they are pretty fitted.

Love them both! Maybe I will give those jeans a try. I am 5’10 and a size 12.
