edit i chopped about four inches off the bottom of this dress, hurrah! liking it much better now, especially with a little brown jersey cardigan that i have.
so i went to the fabric store on my lunch break. i was not going to buy anything. there wasn’t even anything i really wanted. so how did i end up with this madras patchwork? aliens. i swear. i came to in the middle of the supermarket, paying for paper towels for the office, with this parcel of fabric under my arm and totally missing fifteen minutes. where was i? what happened? what was that bright light, those cutting sounds?
so on patternreview.com they’re doing a contest for variations on a pattern and i just might enter. this is the first of one of several variations of simplicity 2599 that i’ve been thinking about: a dress length version. i was all excited about the plaid even though warning bells rang out: it will be too much plaid. and it was. i tacked on the brown fabric into a mock belt and it helped, but not much. then i chopped off the hem as per the edit above, and it helped quite a bit. also, it’s just so breezy. really. and comfortable. and it’s my first blind hem too!
i have enough left over that i can probably wrangle a pair of shorts out of the rest that will get worn with much more enthusiasm, though i kinda really do like this dress in a plaid-y way. i just fear that from certain angles i will be a blindingly plaid blimp floating by. in any case, it will be perfect for roaming the sweaty beaches of the east coast in a few weeks’ time.
madras patchwork, vintage button on the mock belt, quilt cotton scrap for belt, vintage cotton bias binding on arms and neck.

Find a brown cardi to wear over it (or you could go totally preppy with the cardie around your shoulders and some cute keds!) or if you have some of the brown belt fabric left you could add a yoke. I like the pattern and it does look like it would be very cool. The dress is cute!
