Butterick 5882: MISSES’ DRESS: Lined dress has bias shoulder straps extending into band, bias pleated bra with stay, princess seams, close-fitting, boned bodice, inside belt, and back zipper.
I love this pattern!
The only thing that I am not thrilled with is the bias cut strap piece. First, it uses a ton of fabric. I do not have a problem adding hanger loops to my makes, and do it all the time. But even without hanging the dress by the straps, I am concerned that they will stretch out over time. Obviously the front portion of the strap has to have some stretch. If I make this again, I will probably interface the portion of the straps that serve as straps but not the center front portion.
The underbust strap would not stay in place on its own, so I tacked it down at the corners.
Speaking of straps, I added a bit of width to them by using a narrow seam. Where the strap piece is sewn to the front bodice, I made sure to place the strap raw edges below the bodice raw edge so everything matched up.
It is also worth noting that this pattern has more ease at the waistline than I have seen before with fitted waist designs in the Butterick line.
Just for fun, I used a calico print for the lining pieces. This is invisible when worn, but the cotton was something I had on hand, and is so much easier to apply boning channels to than a drapey lining fabric!
I am almost positive that I will be making another one of these. Perhaps I will swap out another skirt design, or add some sleeves, but the shelf-bust design is too much fun not to use again.
I would highly recommend picking this pattern up!
And, as always, more pictures may be found over on my blog, Lilacs & Lace.
